Casa Alegria - Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica

Casa Alegria is a spacious and secluded ocean view villa located steps away from the Manuel Antonio beach. The villa is fully air conditioned and beautifully decorated in a Balinese style and is one of the few houses in Manuel Antonio within walking distance of the beach.

The house is designed to maximize the feeling of light and air, with floor to ceiling windows on each level facing the view of the ocean, lush rain forest, and stunning Pacific sunsets.

Both of the upper levels have large balconies spanning the length of the house, which are perfect for enjoying dinner or drinks in the warm evening air, or even better - a massage from one of our many accomplished spa therapists. The balconies are also a fantastic spot for watching the abundant wildlife in the rain forest surrounding the house, and monkeys, sloths and tropical birds can be viewed without leaving your chair.

CasaTolteca Walk to Beach

The rental home is conveniently located on a paved street just 80 yards from the Manuel Antonio road and the Costa Verde Hotel where you can wave down a taxi or catch the bus in front of the hotel, or walk to any number of fine restaurants. The beach is just 5 minutes away!

Casa Alegria - Reviews

I've been to Costa Rica 5 times in the past 5 years and stayed at Casa Alegria each time. I LOVE it. It is perfectly situated for the beach, the jungle, the view, and access to Manuel Antonio. I don't think I ever have to drive more than 5 minutes to get anywhere. The beach is literraly a 2 minute walk, and it's like a private little area just for the houseguests. They have chair rentals, will serve drinks and food, and it's so peaceful. So much better than the public beach down the road.

The house is great. Perfectly furnished and tastefully decorated. The housekeeper does a phenomenal job, and even does laundry!!!!! I came home with a luggage full of clean, perfectly folded clothing. The pool is a perfect way to cool down after a day at the beach, and the jacuzzi is great to rest those tired muscles.....In all, a perfect vacation home.

As I awaken dreamily in the morning to monkey cries, I walk out to my balcony to watch the show.  For 20+ minutes I see two kinds of monkeys, with their troops, frolicking in the trees (many with babies on backs) just out of my reach.  It is amazing!  Some actually end up on the balcony within inches of my friends' feet, probably looking for a handout -- it is breakfast time after all!
I return to my beautifully-appointed room, with its comfy four poster bed (crisp, luxurious white sheets, cozy comforter and down pillows!), and climb back in for a little additional R&R (watching monkeys can be exhausting!).
Later in the morning, I see several beautiful giant green lizards crawling out on tree branches as I have moved upstairs to Casa Alegria's main floor balcony that looks out over the pool and ocean.  I have spent hours out there talking, reading and just enjoying nature's riches.
It takes us about 3 minutes to walk down the hill to the beach, where we set up our chairs and take in this almost private part of the beach that is ours.  Since it's low tide, we take a walk, heading north, and climb over the rocks to discover a small cove with its own beach and restaurant.  I love this place. . . it's a dream to have table service in the sand!
After lunch we bob in the waves before heading back to our chairs to do some boogie boarding (another perk of the house), reading and snoozing.  We head back to the house to enjoy the pool and hot tub, but our conversation is interrupted by another troop of monkeys coming through - another half hour of sheer entertainment.
Now we have to shower and clean up for cocktail hour (during an incredible sunset) and dinner (either a chef at the house or a choice of a zillion restaurants), before heading back to bed and having a repeat performance tomorrow.
A perfect lazy day in a perfect location.  A perfect tropical vacation.

The view from Casa Alegria is of a birder's paradise! From the decks of the villa, you can view several varied habitats. From the tree canopy at eye-level to sweeping coastal views to the jungle floor, there are fantastic opportunities to see many tropical birds from the comfort of your deck chair. Bring your optics for enhanced viewing pleasure. The deck provides an excellent level surface to set up your spotting scope and perhaps do a little digiscoping.
During our visit, we observed many lifers including the Gray-headed Chachalaca, Magnificent Frigatebird, Crested Caracara, Gray-necked Wood Rail, Smooth-billed Ani, Great Kiskadee, and Cherrie's Tanager, among others. I think the most spectacular bird viewed from the deck was the Blue-crowned Motmot with its stunning brilliant blue crown, a daily visitor.
Each day provided another opportunity close by for birding in the surrounding Central Pacific Coast area. Manual Antonio National Park is just a few steps away and local guides provide excellent tours. Through Casa Alegria's concierge, you can even arrange for you own private guide to bird the countryside and rural areas off the beaten path.
Costa Rica is a must-see for any avid birder! Pura Vida!

The trip and the house were great! We loved the fact that all bedrooms had its own bathroom and the pool came in very handy since it was a hike back up hill from the beach. Loved the view..the sunsets were amazing. We had great meals everywhere we went, but really loved Kapi Kapi, the macadamia nut Maui and chocolate lave cake was awesome.
The Canopy Safari tour was also great for the money. 10 zips, 2 repels and a tarzan swing....friendly staff with a sense of humor...and of course safety first! I thought the hospitality everywhere we went was awesome! The maid at Casa Alegria did a fantastic job keeping the house clean and towels were never any issue because you have it stocked very well. Thomas was also very accommodating and available.
We just spent 10 incredible days at Casa Alegria. We like staying at houses instead of hotels when we travel and "Casa Alegria" was a fantastic choice! The photos & description sold us on it, but it's bigger and more beautiful in person. Private suites with full amenities on every floor - each one looking out to a magnificent view - the house was beautifully decorated (better than other houses we've rented around the world), comfortable, casual, but luxurious. We felt relaxed and pampered the entire time we were there, including full, daily maid service which added the one "hotel-like" amenity we like to have.
In fact, we enjoyed the house, the large pool and the pristine private beach so much that we never got around to the great Costa Rica excursions that we meant to do! The restaurants up the hill in town are great but we did have the concierge organize a chef to come prepare & serve dinner at the house one night which was delicious and a blast! We also had excellent massage therapists come to the house a few times after "exhausting" days of surf, sand, reading, sleeping and swimming. Fresh coffee & fruit before ambling to the beach in the morning and having cocktails while watching the sunset from the terrace before dinner was the perfect way to enhance the relaxed atmosphere everyday.
Maybe the most exciting thing was waking up every morning to see so many monkeys & birds jumping from tree to tree and all around the house (sometimes close enough to touch) as we watched from the terrace and they watched us! With the jungle & ocean view literally in our back yard, it was another excuse not to go anywhere.
We loved it and can't wait to go back to Casa Alegria again. I only hope we'll force ourselves to leave the house at least once next time to explore Manuel Antonio National Park (which is at the end of the beach!), zip line through a rainforest or take a sunset cruise with the dolphins.

It is phenomenal to return to Casa Alegria from a gorgeous day jumping waves in the warm surf at the beach and find beautiful exotic flowers artfully arranged all over the impeccably spotless house and clean, white, crisp sheets on the beds. The panoramic views of the ocean and rain forest are incredible from every room. The swimming pool is the perfect place to come together with friends and family in the evening and recount the events of the day before having dinner in one of the myriad of nearby restaurants. With all of the monkeys, iguanas, rare birds and sloths outside, we truly felt like we were staying in a Peaceable Kingdom from a Rousseau painting. It was heavenly. Thank you!
